This game was inspired by Jorge Luis Borges' short story, The Library of Babel, via this video by the wonderful Jacob Geller. It wasn't until after I'd started development on this project that I read the story and saw how far I diverged from Borges' vision. I'm glad that I did though, there's already so many adaptations out there that I'm happy that I could do something unique.
The Library of Babel is a 3 person project- myself, a modeler found on Fiverr, and an audio guy who I've worked with on Soar for the last couple of years. The library is built out around the player as they travel through it, and the "books" are really just a single book that gets regenerated whenever the player interacts with a book.
I found that Hierarchical Instanced Static Meshes, Nanite, and Multi-threading were powerful optimization tools that allowed me to preserve my vision for the library. I also used some Marketplace assets, for the player book and for the birds. In future I plan to add more audio, refine the implementation of birds, and further polish the visuals.
